A PODCAST ABOUT THE DEATH OF SMALLTOWN NEWS
in this eyewitness account to the demise of local newspapers, WE dive into the struggles of the Shelter Island Reporter, a rural local weekly paper that nearly shut down in 2024.
It’s a story playing out all over the nation.
About JAKE
When I worked for the Shelter Island Reporter (2007-09), I lived in what was once a functioning chicken coop on the family farm my grandparents bought in 1953. Across the field where I learned to drive a tractor when I was 12 sits the farmhouse where my aunt (current Town Supervisor Amber Brach-Williams) and uncle (former Town Supervisor Art Williams) lived when I was there. I reported, wrote and/or edited more than 1,000 articles for the Reporter, from high school sports to Town Board meetings and everything in between. I also learned I never want to be a public figure again. Until the possibility of a sale fell through, I was part of a group of potential buyers when the Reporter was briefly up for sale in the summer of 2024.
